July 13 Conference Call Readings

Hello, all--

Great thanks to Werner for forwarding the pictures (I look forward to
scrolling through them all!) and to Carlo for his sweet message.

Attached are two readings for a July 13 call, though I don't think the
exact time for the call has been scheduled (Bruce--?).

The readings are "The Vocation of Being," by the poet and linguist
Robert Bringhurst, from his stunning book of essays "The Tree of
Meaning," and the chapter "iGod," from Nicholas Carr's recent book "The
Big Switch." As you will see, Bringhurst concerns himself with the
relationship between language and being human; Carr, with the
relationship between technology and being human. The contrasts between
the essays are striking; the questions we might address in a conference
call are many and could include:

Given the ubiquity of computer technology in our society and in our
educational system, how can we think about teaching "being" in the
classroom--explicitly and implicitly, by word and by example? How do we
approach the question of idolatrous values when our students see their
values as "normal" and validated by social conventions? What is/should
be the role of language in the development of technology, and what
is/should be the role of "meaning"?

And so on.

I'll be using these two essays, among others, as springboards for a
panel discussion among my second-semester comp students during our
(newly-named) university's annual fall "Ethics Awareness Week." Will
look forward to your input!

Further word will be coming, I'm sure, about the time of the upcoming
conference call. A happy 4th of July holiday to you all.

Julie J. Nichols, Ph.D.

Greetings All,

For those who havn't seen this yet, here's a wonderful 1 minute video
that instantiates some of our discussions.....awareness, embracing, etc.
I'm incorporating it into my Wisdom Therapy work and my teaching.

Cheers,

Next Phone Discussion--July 13

Hi, all!

We will be hosting another phone discussion at our old usual time on July 13--9pm Eastern, 6 Pacific. I've been immersed in reading and writing since I got back, but I'll be compiling conference materials, and a full report, and sending more pictures when my piece is done--and Allison is compiling our first AEPL newsletter to be sent out in a while. I think we'll try to do the calls roughly bi-weekly--get to me if you're interested in doing one, or if you would like us to ask certain other conference speakers to lead.

Yours,
Bruce

Conference Call Sunday, June 22

Hi, everyone!

On last week's conference call, we talked about the diversity of folks at the conference, about the challenges of taking the work of the conference back into the "real" world, and also all agreed that it would be good to continue our community by offering the next series of conference calls to the leaders of the concurrent sessions at the conference, so that more can have a sense of the richness and diversity of the content there.

To that end, I've asked Grace Feuerverger to lead the next call, which will be on Sunday at 1 pm Eastern, 10am Pacific. 218-936-6666 code 9936250#. You might want to check out Grace's two books Teaching, Learning, and Other Miracles (foreword by Bill Ayers, blurbs by Maxine Greene and Richard Rodriguez) and Oasis of Dreams (about an Israeli-Palestinian joint community). Sorry for the short notice, but this is the only time Grace is available before the 4th of July.

We will try to schedule another call next Sunday. Let me know if you're interested in leading one of these in the future.

Hope to talk to many of you on Sunday!

Yours,
Bruce

Sunday June 15, Conference Call, 9 pm

Hi everyone!

I've realized the only time I know I have for a call to debrief after the conference is that listed above. If you'd like to reconnect and share how it's been for you coming down from the conference, give a call to the usual number: 218-936-6666, code 9936250#.

I'll be sending more announcements regarding conference evaluations/followup in the next few days.

All the best to all of you!
Bruce

Concluding Thought from 2008 Conference

Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world's grief. Do justly, now. Love mercy now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.
